directions
Shred or chop the cabbage into small strips. Peel and chop the onion. Peel, core, and chop the apple and crush (mince) the garlic. Place all these in a large saucepan and add the vinegar, butter, sugar, caraway seed and salt and freshly-ground pepper to taste.
Place over a low heat, cover and cook for 5 minutes, shaking the pan occasionally. Add the water, bring to the boil and then simmer gently for 40 minutes. Serve hot.
