To serve 2:
1 lb apples
4 oz sugar
2 tablespoons water
2 oz flour
2 oz rolled oats (porridge)
2 oz butter
4 oz sugar
2 tablespoons water
2 oz flour
2 oz rolled oats (porridge)
2 oz butter
How to Cook Apple Crumble
- Peel the apples, cut into quarters and remove the cores. Put the water, half the sugar and the apples in a pan and cook on a moderate heat for about 30 minutes, stirring from time to time to break down any larger lumps of apple.
- Meanwhile, sift the flour into a large bowl using a sieve (strainer) to remove any lumps. Add the rolled oats, the rest of the sugar and the butter and mix together using your hands. Add no water, just keep crumbling together with your fingers until you have a granular consistency.
- Place the stewed apple from the pan into an ovenproof dish about 6" (15cm) diameter and spread the crumble mixture evenly on top. Place in a preheated moderately hot oven (Mk 5 - 375ºF - 190ºC) for 15-20 minutes until the crumble is a light golden colour.
- Apple Crumble can be prepared up to a day in advance and reheated in a preheated oven (Mk 1 - 275ºF - 140ºC) 15 minutes before you are ready to serve it.
If you want the apple crumble topping to be slightly sweet and crispier, just sprinkle a little extra sugar over before cooking.
